Franz Bernheimer,
Israeli draftsman 1911-1997
"..Basically drawing is something very simple; it needs only a paper and one pencil to put a line around an idea, or something seen and remembered…
I have explored every characteristic of line -- those drawn quickly or slowly, or with pressure …I observed lines in nature – bare trees against the sky in winter, and underfoot, the cracks in stone pavement.. I have used these lines in my drawings, composing like a musician, to achieve chords, rhythm, contrasts - fullness unified to a stillstand.
And I want by this to trap time, to stop it from running ahead of me, and to compel from the viewer a long, contemplative gaze equal to his participation in the picture’s own essential stillness."
